The United States Congress designated the North McCullough Wilderness in 2002 and it now has a total of 14,763 acres. All of the wilderness is in Nevada and is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The North McCullough Wilderness is completely surrounded by the larger (48,438 acres) Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area (NCA). The Sloan Canyon Petroglyph site is one of the most significant cultural resources in Southern Nevada.
